The Cold Sore Toolbox

Not the most pleasant of topics but these little blighters cause massive amounts of stress, pain and can make you feel very self conscious.

I felt compelled to share my recent experience and protocol...which has worked a treat!

After a lovely day spent in Bondi on Saturday with my son, I woke up on Sunday morning with a dry patch on my lip....I put some moisturiser on it and didn’t think anything more about it. I was feeling really tired and off but I put it down to having a later night.

Monday morning, the dreaded tingle started and I knew what I was in for, arrgghhhh!

I haven’t had a cold sore for about 2 years and I find them to be a good barometer on how my immune system is doing. Stress and anxiety has been high over the last few months and that has been showing up as fatigue, low mood and the sniffles for me. This is my sign that I haven’t been giving my body the rest it needs.

I kicked into action right away and used a variety of different things and today it’s almost gone!

Here’s the protocol I used:

  • Vitamin C

I used high doses of Vit C, about 2-3G every hour up to bowel tolerance... i.e you have to poop.

  • Zinc

Low zinc means your body is more vulnerable to viral attacks. Supplementing supports the immune system allowing it to fight off this nasty virus.

  • L-Lysine

3G a day - this helps to slow down and prevent the growth of the herpes simple virus type 1 (HSV-1), which is responsible for cold sores.

  • Nat Mur homeopathy

I have been feeling pretty down and sensitive the last couple of days and now I know it’s due to the cold sore. As soon as I took Nat mur I felt so much better mentally!

There are a few different homeopathic remedies you can use for cold sores but this is the main one, especially if your state of mind isn’t great.

My kit is from Ainsworths and it is truly an amazing kit to have on hand for any ailments. I don’t know what I would have done without it since my son has been born. I think will have to write a separate blog post on this!

  • Renu 28 gel

I alternated between applying this to heal and dry it out and tea tree oil to kill the virus.

Renu 28 is amazing stuff - it empowers communication at the cellular level which helps to rejuvenate your body's skin cells.

I use it daily for anti-ageing and any skin blemishes. It even helps with muscular pain.

  • Doterra Tea tree oil roller

I dabbed this on every hour with my finger or a cotton tip. Don’t apply the rollerball straight to your skin as you will keep re-infecting your lip.

  • Reduce foods with Arginine

This helps the herpes simplex virus to multiply.

  • Increase foods with Lysine

This prevents the growth of the herpes simplex virus.

  • Don’t touch it!

The virus spreads very easily so be mindful of touching your face a lot or scratching at any sores.

Rest, meditate and nourish your body with whole foods.

I wish I’d had this toolbox for when I’ve had bad breakouts in the past. If you are prone to coldsores or any herpes outbreak it’s great to have all of these things on hand to nip it in the bud from the first tingle.

I’d love to hear of any other natural remedies you use.... And if you use this protocol with success :)
